One of the trends I’m into is denim and love the fact that vintage Levis jeans are making a big comeback. Denim cutoffs have been in style for some time now, but with the return of the mom jeans, I feel old school denim really has it’s moment.
I don’t want to get all preachy on you, but I do want to point out that the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry and there are already more than enough clothes out there. Buying vintage clothing is a great way to get high quality clothing (they’ve lasted this far) for a bargain.
Without further ado, let’s get you some good ol’ vintage Levis jeans!
01. Define your figure
Once you know what your body type looks like, it makes shopping so much easier. I don’t believe in limiting yourself, but it’s nice to know what suits you and how you can emphasize those areas.
02. Visit a vintage store
There are loads of vintage stores nowadays, I went to a chain of vintage stores called Episode. They haves stores in Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Paris and Antwerpen. The great thing about Episode is that they have loads of vintage Levis jeans to choose from, as well as other on-trend items such as 90’s sport brands sweaters (think Nike, Kappa, Fila) and blue striped shirts (I spotted a Ralph Lauren one).
03. Set a budget
Because vintage clothing can be quite cheap, you get carried away easily and buy loads of stuff, which is not what we’re aiming for here. When you set a budget and make a list of what you actually need, it’s easy to hold yourself accountable.
04. Choose a color
Vintage Levis jeans come in different colors. You have the different washes, but because these jeans have all been worn before, you have different stages of wear too. When I bought my pair I had a look at my current wardrobe and figured out exactly what would compliment it. Questions you can ask yourself are: Where are gaps? What colors are easy to combine with my current wardrobe?
04. Pick a style
This ties in with defining your figure, but it also has to do with the look you’re going for. If you want to look casual, an oversized pair of mom jeans and a few rips can look great. If your style is more classic, you might want to opt for a bootcut and a darker wash.
The great thing about buying secondhand clothing is that you can do whatever you want to it, without feeling guilty. As I mentioned in my blog post about clothing hacks, cutting off or cutting up denim and can give a basic pair of jeans that bit of extra personality. Of course you can also dye your pair or add fun patches.
I would love to hear your stories about finding a pair of vintage Levis jeans, so comment below and let me know what you think!
